And to make things worse, on the year he got to celebrate his actual birthday — as opposed to his usual Feb. 28 celebration date — he was feeling under the weather, barely able to talk.

He’d have to miss lunch too, because he made a doctor’s appointment at noon. His friends planned to take him to dinner Wednesday night, but Jones said he was uncertain about it.

“The way I feel now, I’m going to be in my room,” he said.
